Losing your credibility

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR MOBILE PHONE?!!” the presenter asked aggressively from the front.

“I’m taking notes” my colleague calmly responded.

“Oh… OK… I was just curious.” The presenter said uncomfortable.

 

This recent workshop interchange shocked me. I suppose the presenter reached her goal - nobody used a mobile phone for the rest of the day. But there were huge costs for that. Not only did she make my colleague feel attacked, but she also lost credibility…

Model behaviour

Attending seminars is an essential part of my work. But maybe it is also one of the most difficult parts. It is not always easy to stay focused.

I know that I’m sometimes tempted to:

• quietly check the news or emails on my phone

• leave the room and follow up more pressing work or even domestic issues by phone

• continue talking to other participants

• formulate a difficult question to take the seminar off track

• even fall asleep

The perfect facilitator

Facilitation – what does it really mean? Is it just more development jargon? What makes a good facilitator anyway? Is it about being tall, male, early 40s?



These were some of my questions before I heard an excellent talk by Clio Kenterelidou of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She helped me understand the three core roles of a facilitator; showed me what matters most and passed on very specific do’s and don’ts. I was so inspired I put it into a slideshow.
