The source of our resources

By Beena George

After so many years I was passing along that highway again - a road I used to travel so often during my college days. I used to wait for a spectacular sight: parallel to the road, there was a huge river that flowed gently and majestically. On the other side there was a canal, carrying water to the distant rural land. Unlike other canals, this one was almost always flowing. I felt so happy for  the canal. It was the sole instrument of making an otherwise drought-prone…

Peace within and around you

By Priya Ashvita Raj Kumar

Jerk ... jerk.. bump... bump. It was stiflingly hot. We were covered in dust and perspiration. My husband, two year old daughter and I were jostling around in a car, on our way to a remote village in Assam, India. We were going to evaluate a project focussing on peace and development among the tribals who had previously suffered ethnic violence. After hours of exhausting travel, we eventually reached the village. The car stopped and we surrounded by…

Keeping Focus

By Nigel Ring

Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

That’s such a challenging statement by Jesus. It’s so easy to lose focus on what’s most important, even vital. If you are like me, you can be quickly distracted from your main task. We are surrounded by distractions. These seem to grow daily as we are accosted by information technology and the demands of the world.

Personally I find the greatest…

The lure of the lucrative quick fix, by Doreen Kwarimpa-Atim

Temptations come in all shapes and sizes. They are often tailored to your own particular weaknesses or situation

A few weeks ago a reputable NGO in Uganda asked me to facilitate three different capacity building interventions over three days. As an independent consultant with no guaranteed source of income I naturally celebrate any well-paid job that comes my way - especially that week when cash flow was tight. But I was unsure about this one. Each intervention was large enough to…

Walking in the light - by William Otiende Ogara

It is amazing how secretive we can be at work – particularly when there is conflict. I’m currently involved in a change process with a large church in Africa. The board, elected one year ago, inherited a culture of secrecy and mystery. In the absence of information pastors assumed that the HQ is awash with money. Funders insisted that they be invited to AGMs so that they could be forensically involved in the finances. Conflict dominated the AGM. There was no trust so income was declining.…

Who influences you? By Pieter Messelink

I share an office with a funny colleague, so I find I’m frequently making jokes. It’s because he makes them all the time. During a recent meeting, I made a comment and realised ’Hey, that’s not my sort of joke. It’s his’. The same happens the other way round. When he was discussing a project with our head of department, she said: ‘I can hear that you have been talking to Pieter about this already’.

We are profoundly influenced by the people close to us. If we are around happy people,…

Be still and trust the process, by Doreen Kwarimpa-Atim

I still struggle to trust the client’s process. With almost two decades of working as a teacher and top-down trainer I’m used to giving people the benefit of my opinion! Now as an OD practitioner, I catch myself trying to put my own ideas forward, making sure my client sees what I see about their situation. At such times I get worried that the exercise I am using will not get them to ‘my’ answers. I forget that in the end it is only what the client sees that matters. They will only take…

Tough Changes in Mekane Yesus

Space for Grace Bulletin 1-2014

Change in churches is not for the faint-hearted. With God all things are possible, but it requires of us hard choices and on-going effort. What happened in the South Central Ethiopia Synod shows how leadership earned their right to lead the church through listening, through service and through communication. A deep spiritual repentance was…
